GREETINGS FROM GEOS NEW YORK
Welcome to our September Newsletter! Summer is coming to an end and the crowds are slowly dwindling down all around New York. New York City in September is the New York you see in movies; free of the crowds of tourists and a mix of sunny skies and mild weather. Baseball Season (Go Yankees!), Fashion Week, and the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11 Memorial are the big events for the month to come.
Again, please keep in touch and join our FACEBOOK group! Feel free to insert pictures and share your experiences with your friends. Day after day, our FACEBOOK group is becoming more and more popular. It is always a pleasure to look at all the pictures added. Some of our current students discuss their wonderful stays in New York and at GEOS.

MEET OUR STAFF
We are happy to introduce one of our new teachers: Kristin Foss. Kristin has a B.A. in Secondary English Education and a CELTA certification. She has experience teaching ELA to high school students and ESL to students from all over the world, ages 16 and up. Kristin loves to travel and has lived in the Caribbean, Europe, and South America. She now teaches our Level 3 and Level 4 students in our Intensive English Program.

Kristin Foss
Levels 3 & 4 Teacher
Meet Kristin: "Hello! My name is Kristin and I am a relatively new teacher at GEOS. I am excited to be working at such a wonderful school, full of amazing students and an amazing staff. Even though I am a teacher, I feel like I learn something new from my students everyday! I majored in Secondary English Education before realizing that ESL was my passion. I spent some time in Chile teaching English before returning to the USA and getting my CELTA. I have lived abroad in Norway, Martinique, and Chile. I am proud to be part of the multicultural world that is GEOS."
Stay tuned next month for another teacher profile for Kristin Foss!
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN NEW YORK
In September, the crisp air and refreshing cool of fall allows for lots of opportunities to enjoy and learn about the city, both indoors and outdoors. The top 3 events that I consider worth seeing are Baseball Season (Go Yankees!), Fashion Week, and the Tenth Anniversary of 09/11 Memorial.
1. Baseball Season: What could be better at the end of summer than sitting in the bleachers sipping a cool beverage and watching your favorite baseball team? Nothing! Baseball is one of the oldest and most cherished sports of not only American culture, but New York Culture. See the New York Yankee’s game schedule here.
2. Fashion Week: Models, designers, and fashion lovers alike flock to New York in September for the ultimate fashion extravaganza: New York Fashion Week. Some believe that Fashion Week will determine what’s “in style” for the season. Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer of 2011 is September 13th-20th and is followed by Fashion Week in London, Milan and Paris. Check out more information here.
3. Tenth Anniversary of 9/11 Memorial: September 11th is one day that New Yorkers all come together and mourn for those who lost their lives. This September marks the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attack. Mayor Bloomberg of New York, along with former president George Bush and current president Barack Obama will be at the memorial ceremony which will take place near the World Trade Center site on the morning of Sunday, September 11, 2011. "First of all I want to say that GEOS has the most friendly staff I’ve ever seen in any language school. Location is great. So many different people so many different lives."

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
August is already over and we have had such a great month! Below you can see just a few of the many activities and memories we enjoyed sharing with our students.

Above is a photo from our Junior Group on an excursion to the Financial District. The giant sculpture in the picture is actually a part of “Art in the Parks”, which displays large works of art in public places for the people to enjoy.
If you are interested or would like to find out more about this program, email us here! This program is now closed to applications for the summer of 2011, but we are accepting applications for 2012.

The picture above was taken during one of our trips to Times Square. The red stairs that the students are standing on are from the TKTS booth. TKTS offers discount tickets to Broadway and Off Broadway shows, usually up to 50% off! The stairs also offer the perfect view of Times Square at any hour.

This picture above is taken from one of our Holiday Groups, who got to enjoy a trip on the Hudson River to arrive at the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty was given to the United States by France in 1886 as a token of friendship, and is a symbol of freedom and democracy.
