GREETINGS FROM GEOS NEW YORK

Welcome to our November Newsletter! Halloween has passed and the Holiday season is in full swing. As families in the U.S. prepare for months of food and gifts, we get ready for the famous Thanksgiving Day parade, a classic institution of New York, as well as the lighting of the legendary Rockefeller Center Christmas tree that has been the centerpiece of many films.

Please keep in touch and join our FACEBOOK group! Feel free to insert pictures and share your experiences with your friends. Day after day, our FACEBOOK group is becoming more and more popular. It is always a pleasure to look at all the pictures added. Some of our current students discuss their wonderful stays in New York and at GEOS.

Staff Introduction for GEOS ESL New York

Sharon Teague
Academic Coordinator

Meet Sharon: My name is Sharon Teague and I am very happy to be the new Academic Coordinator at GEOS NYC. Having worked as the AC at GEOS San Francisco, I can boast I have covered both Coasts of the U.S. in ESL instruction! I graduated from UNC Greensboro with a B.S. in Education and obtained public school licensure. I was a middle school teacher here in the States before beginning my travels abroad.  I began my TEFL career in Prague, Czech Republic and continued on to Tokyo, Japan. Before making my way to New York City, I returned to university and earned an additional teaching license in ESL, K-12. I enjoy teaching and meeting students from everywhere in the world and hearing about their particular cultures. In my free time I like to travel, read, dance, play Yahtzee, and watch old 70's horror movies.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN NEW YORK

Fall descends upon the city in November. You can expect the to see the changing colors of the leaves and the days more quickly giving way to brisk, sometimes chilly nights. Get ready for the holiday season with the Thanksgiving Day Parade, the 14th annual Chocolate Show, and beautiful fall foliage.

1. Thanksgiving Day Parade: A New York Institution! On November 24, 2011 at 9 a.m. the 85th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade will begin. The parade travels down Central Park West from 77th street and continues through Manhattan to  Macy's Herald Square. Floats and Marching Bands for everyone!

2. 14th Annual New York Chocolate Show: Like Chocolate? We do! Come to the Chocolate show at the Metropolitan Pavilion to experience cooking demonstrations, book signings, and 65 chocolate companies from around the world sharing their wonderful treats.

3. Beautiful Fall Foliage: Be an active participant in the changing of the seasons by taking time to view the wonderful changing colors of New York's plant life. Central Park is a great place for this. Also, the Circle Line offers cruises down the Hudson River that will make for a lovely memory of fall.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

October is already over and we have had a wonderful month! Below you can see just a few of the many activities and memories we enjoyed sharing with our students.

 Halloween

Halloween

These photos are from our Halloween party, something we enjoy every year! Food, fun, and music were enjoyed as we celebrated this spooky holiday. We had some particularly great costumes this year thanks to our creative students!

TOEFL Class

Sometimes the best way to show your feelings is to draw a picture!
This was drawn by one of the students in our very excellent TOEFL class taught by our very excellent TOEFL instructor, Dee. It's a bit nostalgic, don't you think??

Movie Outing

We went to see Paranormal Activity 3!
Some students thought the movie was scary, others a bit silly, but everyone had a great time. New York City is loaded with movie theaters, including several that offer 3D and IMAX.
