GREETINGS FROM GEOS NEW YORK

Welcome to our June Newsletter! May has passed with a mix of beautiful days and rainy days. Now that June is here, the spring weather is slowly fading into summer and we are able to be outdoors more and more. This makes sense as June is known as Great Outdoors Month. In June we also have “Art in the Parks”; Union Square Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Central Park, and even our very own Madison Square Park are just a couple of locations that have works of art on display to take part in this great event.

Again, please keep in touch and join our FACEBOOK group! Feel free to insert pictures and share your experiences with your friends. Day after day, our FACEBOOK group is becoming more and more popular. It is always a pleasure to look at all the pictures added. Some of our current students discuss their wonderful stays in New York and at GEOS.

“I have been teaching for 7 1/2 years. I love teaching ESL at GEOS in New York because I have the possibility to meet people from around the globe. The students who study here are from different backgrounds and are able to form lasting friendships. Moreover, I love teaching ESL because I speak several languages which enables me to relate to my students.”

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN NEW YORK

In June, there are many activities to choose from in New York. See my top picks below:

1. Art in the Parks: This month many different parks and public areas will be participating in Art in the Parks. My top locations to visit are Madison Square Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and Central Park. See all of the locations and their art exhibitions here.
2. National Get Outdoors Day: As mentioned earlier, the month of June is known as the Great Outdoors Month. More specifically, June 11th is the National Get Outdoors Day. Campgrounds all over New York will be celebrating by holding different events, such as outdoor volleyball, hiking, hay rides and of course camping! Check out a list of all the events and different campgrounds here!
3. HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival: In June, New Yorkers who love a good movie are always excited for Bryant Park’s Summer Film Festival. Every Monday starting on June 20th Bryant Park is the best place to be with a blanket and friends. On a giant projection screen HBO will show iconic movies from the past. Check out the list of films to be shown here.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

May is already over and we have had such a great month! Below you can see just a few of the many activities and memories we enjoyed sharing with our students.

Student Activities for GEOS New York School, ESL, Study English

This month we got to go as a group to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie! We went to the Regal Cinemas in their famous Union Square location. You will see from the picture that we got to watch the 3D version of this film on opening night.

The picture above was taken in our Level 4 class. They had a “getting to know each other” activity where they asked their partners different questions about their country and culture and then presented their findings to the class.

This month our students got to enjoy Eat at Madison Square Park! May 6th through June 3rd from 11am - 9pm, vendors from different local restaurants and boutiques set up shop right by our school. Some of these vendors include: Asia Dog, Momofuku Milk Bar, Calexico Carne Asada, Eataly, Stuffed Artisan Cannolis and Eataly. Roberta’s Pizza even had a wood-burning oven to bake their delicious pizza. Click here to see a full video of the event that lasted all month, with great food and shopping right next to the beautiful Madison Square Park.

JUNIOR PROGRAM

Our Junior Program is quickly approaching and we can’t wait to have all of the young energy that this group brings to our school!

Junior Summer Program / Camp / Study Tour for Teens at GEOS New York School

Our Junior Group is ideal for teens 13 to 17 and has an exciting mix of half day activities, excursions, and English classes. With open enrollment, students from all over the world can join our program to experience the best of New York City and make new international friends.

Highlights of the Program:
Open enrollment: Start any Monday (June 27 to August 15, 2011)
Flexible course length: Study 1 to 8 weeks
ESL lessons: 12 hours per week*
Cultural Activities: 5 per week (supervised & accompanied by GEOS staff)
Prices include tuition, materials, and all activity admission fees

The Junior Program’s main focus is to provide young adults with the opportunity to socialize in an international setting and make lasting cross-cultural connections in an English environment.

In the morning, students in the Junior Program attend classes and discuss their experiences exploring the city while implementing their knowledge of the English language. In the afternoon students explore New York by going on excursions to different locations that will help expand their knowledge of not only the cultural aspects of New York, but of the everyday life! Some of the activities include the Hudson River Tour, United Nations, The Bronx Zoo, and a tour of the famous Times Square.

Teachers push their students to speak English at all time by enforcing a rule of English only, in and outside of the classroom, to improve their listening and speaking skills while discovering NY.
