GREETINGS FROM GEOS NEW YORK
Welcome to our August Newsletter! July in New York has been a real treat to share with our students. The fireworks for July 4th along the Hudson River in New York are some of the best to be seen. With August here we are looking forward to spending more time outdoors. Some of my favorite events for August are Smorgasbord in Brooklyn and Summer Streets in Manhattan, which you can read more about below. We are also excited to welcome all of our summer Holiday Groups to New York and to share all of these great activities with them!
Again, please keep in touch and join our FACEBOOK group! Feel free to insert pictures and share your experiences with your friends. Day after day, our FACEBOOK group is becoming more and more popular. It is always a pleasure to look at all the pictures added. Some of our current students discuss their wonderful stays in New York and at GEOS.

We are happy to introduce one of our new teachers: David Knoll. David graduated from St. John's University with a B.S. in Communication Arts. He has over four years of ESL teaching experience, having taught all levels of English to students, both young and old, from all around the globe and has taught in Barcelona, Spain, Quito, Ecuador and New York City, U.S.A. David speaks fluent English, German and Spanish. He now teaches our Level 3 and Level 5 students in our Intensive English Program.

Levels 3 & 5 Teacher
Meet David: "Greetings! I'm David and originally hail from Brooklyn, New York! This is my first time teaching at GEOS and I have been instructing ESL students from all around the world for the past four years. I've lived in Germany, Spain, Los Angeles and recently returned from a 5-month trip in Japan. New York City is the perfect place to meet and interact with people from all walks of life, which offers the opportunity to learn from one another. The students here at GEOS are very enthusiastic about using their English and it shows in their improvement. I hope to meet, teach and learn from you as well in the near future!"
Stay tuned next month for another teacher profile for Kristin Foss!
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN NEW YORK
In August, there are many outdoor activities to choose from in New York. Two of my favorites are SmorgasbordM in Brooklyn and Summer Streets in Manhattan.
1. Smorgasbord: This summer, Williamsburg will welcome 100+ vendors for the Smorgasbord. Small farmers, New York City food-makers, chefs, social entrepreneurs, shoppers, and families will be hosted in the large outdoor retail market. Smorgasbord hopes to provide fresh, affordable food and is really interested in promoting ideas about healthy eating. See all of the different restaurants and vendors who will partake here.
2. Summer Streets: This summer, for the fourth year in a row, NYC Dots and its partners will host Summer Streets. For three consecutive Saturdays in August (August 6, 13, & 20) Park Avenue and connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park will be closed to motor vehicles and open to people! Some of the events that will be held are rock climbing, sand sculpting, free bicycle and roller blade rentals, and even a cook-off! Find out more about the activities in Summer Streets here.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
July is already over and we have had such a great month! Below you can see just a few of the many activities and memories we enjoyed sharing with our students.

Above is a photo from our Junior Group on an excursion to D.U.M.B.O, Brooklyn, that boasts one of the best views of the Manhattan skyline. Our Junior Group is ideal for teens 13 to 17 and has an exciting mix of half day activities, excursions, and English classes.
If you are interested or would like to find out more about this program, email us here! This program is now closed to applications for the summer of 2011, but we are accepting applications for 2012.

The picture above was taken during one of our trips to the Museum of Natural History. The dinosaur bones were definitely our favorite part of the museum.

The Met Museum has great art from all parts of the world, including but not limited to the Byzantines, Egypt, Italian… the list goes on and on. What some people may not know is that it also has one of the best rooftop views of Manhattan, specifically Central Park. Our holiday group got to enjoy the view and wonderful weather from high above.
