August 1, 2010 - GEOS New York Newsletter - “What's Up!”

Welcome to our newsletter! August is here and although summer is winding down, the activities in New York are still going strong! Street fairs, free summer concerts, and parades make New York come alive in August. We are looking forward to September and you (yes you!!) to bring your energy and culture to GEOS NYC.

Again, please keep in touch and join our  group! Feel free to insert pictures and share your experiences with your friends. Day after day, our  group is becoming more and more popular. It is always a pleasure to look at all the pictures added. Some of our current students discuss their wonderful stays in New York and at GEOS.

NEW STAFF

We are happy to introduce new members to our staff here at GEOS NY! Many of you may have already been in contact with Daniel Kim, our new Accommodations Officer, and Kristin Young, our new International Service and Sales Coordinator.

DANIEL KIM

Meet Daniel: Daniel Kim is originally from Seoul, Korea! Daniel majored in English at Sungkonghoe University in Korea and received his masters in World Englishes at Oklahoma City University. At GEOS, Daniel makes sure that each student is matched with the best host family for him or her! He also enjoys tea and blueberries.

"It is a miracle to work for GEOS NY! After studying World Englishes at a graduate school in Oklahoma I was honored to get such a great opportunity. I work in Manhattan, which is the heart of the world. It was my dream. I work by using my major with students and staff from all around the world. Isn't it great? I hope you have a big dream and start stepping forward toward your dream through GEOS NY. The GEOS staff and I will do our best to help you. I look forward to seeing you at GEOS NY."

-Daniel Kim (Accommodations Officer, International Service and Sales Coordinator)

Meet Kristin: Kristin Young graduated from CUNY with a major in International Studies and dual minors in French and Spanish. Kristin has studied and worked in both Spain and France and loves being in an international environment! Kristin helps students with the application process and makes sure that new students transition into the school smoothly.

"I am so excited to be added to the GEOS NY team! I received my Bachelors in New York in International Studies - Culture and Communications and have always been drawn to learn as much as I can about other cultures. I love New York and even more I like to share what I know about New York with the students. The diverse and academic atmosphere that GEOS offers its students instantly attacted me to the institute. I look forward to doing everything I can to ensure every student enjoys their experience at GEOS!"

-Kristin Young (International Service and Sales Coordinator)

Francesco was a student in our Junior Summer Holiday Group. This group runs in the summer from June 28th to August 19th. We will miss the energy this group brings to our school. But it is not goodbye, but see you next year!!

"Excellent school! Good teachers, very skilled. I have done interesting excursions and have improved my English.

Also, I have gained new friends.

I wish to come back next year.

Thanks."

PHOTO LOG

Last month we got to go to so many places! Check out our pictures below and see where our students got to explore! The pictures include our trips to D.U.M.B.O., Brooklyn Bridge, a Yankee's game, and dinner enjoying authentic New York pizza!!

NYC CULTURE

Tourists flock to New York in August to experience all of the events that the "Big Apple" has to offer. Although the list is endless, some of my favorites are:

CENTRAL PARK SUMMER STAGE: Summer Stage works with City Parks Foundation (CPF) to offer free concerts during the summer. Their "Main Stage", where this picture was taken, is in Central Park, only a 15 minute train ride from GEOS!

KING TUT EXHIBIT in Times Square: This exhibit is making its last stop in New York before returning to Egypt! I went and saw it last week and it is great. If you stop in the school we will give you a discount coupon!!

MOSTLY MOZART at Lincoln Center: Mostly Mozart holds classical music concerts in Lincoln Center. If you like Classical Music this is the place to go! This series ends on August 21st so get tickets before it is gone till next summer.
